The Research

Continuous scientific success.

The research carried out by “Centro Dino Ferrari”, over the past years, has contributed to the acquisition of new, fundamental knowledge in the neuroscience field. The international recognition of this scientific progress is witnessed and acknowledged through the hundreds of published articles  in specialized high impact journals.

The Centre has contributed in an important way to the discovery of genetic mechanisims in neuromuscular diseases through the identification of new genes in the field of these diseases and in forms of genetically determined dementia. In parallel, diagnostic biomarkers for Alzheimer’s Disease have also been identified .

Pre-clinical development and the experimentation of new therapeutic approaches  have been particularly advanced in Duchenne’s Muscular Dystrophy, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Lateral Amiotrophic Sclerosis and early Dementia. The establishment of experimental  protocols based on modern molecular approaches (antisense oligonucleotides; sostitutive enzyme therapy with recombinant protein; monoclonal antibody) and stem cells represent the most advanced involvement of the Centre.

Other than the at the main centre of the University of Milan, IRCCS Fondazione Ca’ Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, the tireless work of our doctors and researchers is also carried out at: IRCCS Istituto Auxologico Italiano and IRCCS E.Medea di Bosisio Parini (LC).

The transfer of research data to the clinic is one of our principal objectives, as it allows for a response to the needs of patients in terms of diagnosis, prevention and, in many cases, therapy. This link is made strongly possible through the close relations between the clinic and the research which takes place in “Centro Dino Ferrari”.

The deepening of our knowledge in the neuroscience field requires substantial investment in terms of advanced equipment and support for young researchers. The Public financing allocated to research in our country is not sufficient enough in meeting real needs when it comes to highly qualified and competitive research at an international level.

It is therefore fundamental that the support of charity organizations like the Associazione Amici del “Centro Dino Ferrari, contributes in a decisive way to the development of state of the art technological structures.
