At the “Alzheimer’s unit”, directed by Professor Elio Scarpini, clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic activities are performed daily. In addition to these, both primary and clinical investigations are carried out, the latter by means of experimental drugs.
The clinical activity aims at making a diagnosis of cognitive and memory problems through a diagnositc pathway consisting of clinical and radiological activities and biohumoral analyses. Moreover, our center is qualified and authorized by Regione Lombardia to prescribe acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine.
Laboratories, directed by Doctor Daniela Galimberti, are located in the “Padiglione Alfieri” and “Padiglione ex-convitto” (Fondazione Cà Granda, Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano). The activity focuses on cerebrospinal fluid analyses for dementia differential diagnosis and genetic analyses, aimed in particular at determining causal mutations as for early onset familial dementia.
Laboratory investigations in genetics, epigenetics and molecular biology focus on Alzheimer’s disease (AD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and drug clinical trials which, indeed, have to be supported by the collection of biological samples in order for the effectiveness of the new drug to be tested.
The laboratory activity is supported by modern devices provided by Associazione Amici del “Centro Dino Ferrari” and free of charge lease to Fondazione IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico di Milano.
