Outpatients and in Day Hospital patients suffering from various neuromuscular diseases are followed, including:
• Muscle dystrophies
• inflammatory myopathies (polymyositis, dermatomyositis and inclusion body myopathy)
• Congenital myopathies
• metabolic myopathies
• mitochondrial encephalomyopathies
• Iperckemias
On average each year are made about:
– 1100 outpatient visits muscle diseases (350 first visits, checkups 750);
– 160 outpatient visits motor neuron diseases, of which 25 are first visits;
– 348 entrances to DH for the above diseases.
Execution of skeletal muscle biopsies and peripheral nerve
Are performed biopsies of skeletal muscle and peripheral nerve in the open under local anesthesia on an outpatient or day hospital . Patients who need to perform a general anesthetic are hospitalized for a few days in the ward.

The laboratory has been running for about 30 years and examines (storage, analysis and reporting ) about 250 nerve and muscle biopsies per year.
Biopsies are coming from our Institute or other entities affiliated Hospital located throughout Italy and in Switzerland ( Canton Ticino).
Mode reservation and withdrawal reports:
The intervention biopsy can be booked only by a doctor, by calling 02-55036504 Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 15.00 .
For the delivery of biopsies from other institutions must advise the laboratory at least 24 hours in advance.
The reports can be collected from Monday to Friday from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 14.00 to 15.00.

Myoadenylate Deaminase, Myophosphorylase, Phosphofructokinase and other if necessary.
Immunohistochemistry:
HLA, MAC, dystrophin, alpha-sarcoglycan, beta-sarcoglycan, gamma-sarcoglycan, Alpha dystroglycan, merosin, and other Caveolin if necessary.
Peripheral nerve
Biopsies of peripheral nerve were studied by morphometric analysis of the density fibrali and study of single nerve fiber dissociated with the technique of Teasing.
ELECTRON MICROSCOPY
Preparation of semithin sections stained with Toluidine blue and ultrafine contrasted with uranyl acetate and lead citrate.
