Dr. Edoardo Monfrini is a Neurologist and researcher of “Dino Ferrari Center”.
His research activity at Centro Dino Ferrari started in 2015 during an internship as a medical student at the Laboratory of Biochemistry and Genetics under the supervision of his mentor, Dr. Alessio Di Fonzo. Here, he learned the fundamental notions of neurogenetics and was introduced to the classic (e.g., linkage analysis, PCR, Sanger sequencing) and innovative genetic techniques (e.g., next-generation sequencing) needed to identify the causes of hereditary movement disorders. This research work continued during the neurology residency at the Policlinico Hospital of Milan and Ph.D. in Clinical Research at the University of Milan. His research focuses on the genetic causes of inherited neurological disorders, in particular Parkinson’s disease, dystonias, and hereditary ataxias, and consists predominantly of next-generation sequencing data analysis to find new genes and mechanisms involved in neurogenetic disorders. He perfected his scientific training as a Fulbright researcher at the Fresco Institute for Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders (NYU Langone Health, New York, NY, USA) during a 6-months visiting period, further specializing in the field of movement disorders genetics, with a particular focus on bioinformatics and computer programming. This absorbing research activity led to the publication of several papers in international peer-reviewed journals, describing original findings in the field of neurogenetics.
His clinical activity focuses on the diagnosis of movement disorders and rare neurogenetic diseases. He works in the in-patient and out-patient neurology clinic at the Foundation IRCCS Ca’ Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico as a neurologist with specific expertise in movement disorders. He was the research coordinator of the “Spark” clinical trial, which tested an experimental anti-alpha-synuclein monoclonal antibody (BIIB054 – Biogen) in patients with Parkinson’s disease.
